Fluffy domes of purple flowers cover the tall, sturdy stems of Vernonia noveboracensis in late summer and early fall. Also called "New York Ironweed" or just "Ironweed", this perennial is a delight to butterflies and small birds.
Vernonia noveboracensis Ironweed is native to the United States from Massachusetts to Mississippi. It thrives in moist soil, but can tolerate average and dry soil. It would be excellent in rain gardens.
