Penstemon 'Blackbeard' bears large, lilac purple trumpet shaped flowers with white throats on tall stems over upright, semi-shrubby plants. Penstemon 'Blackbeard' is a hybrid developed for its dark purple green, almost black foliage and its compact, non-flopping habit. Blooming from from midsummer to mid fall, this Penstemon hybrid is attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its dark purple seed pods extend its season of interest. Evergreen.
Commonly referred to as Beardtongue, Penstemon is an extensive genus of flowering plants native to North America. There are a large number of species and many wonderful hybrids have been developed for the garden.
Penstemon 'Blackbeard' prefers full sun and average, very well-drained soil. It is drought and salt tolerant. 'Blackbeard' is lovely planted en masse or punctuating the perennial border.
