Cimicifuga (Actaea) racemosa has long, wand-like, fragrant white flower spikes that are held erect over deep green, dissected leaves. Native to the eastern third of North America, Cimicifuga racesmosa makes a good background plant in the shady border.
Cimicifuga racemosa, also known as Black Snakeroot, prefers shade and moist, humus-rich woodland soils and can tolerate wet sites. Do not allow it to dry out or leaf edges will brown. Also known as Bugbane, Cimicifuga racemosa is excellent for late season color.
