Description

Aquilegia canadensis 'Little Lanterns' has star-shaped, coral-orange flowers with tubular corollas that are held above deeply lobed foliage. A dwarf variety of an old-fashioned favorite, 'Little Lanterns' gets only 12" tall. This columbine is long blooming and great for light shade or woodland settings, but can also take some sun. Aquilegia 'Little Lanterns' self-sows where happy. It may be cut back hard to encourage fresh new foliage after blooming.

Aquilegia canadensis is native to most of the eastern two-thirds of N. America.

Aquilegia canadensis 'Little Lanterns' prefers light shade, but tolerates full sun with sufficient moisture. It prefers well-drained soil. This perennial flower is attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds and is usually deer resistant.

Care and Growing Tips

This is a tough perennial that needs very little maintenance to be happy. It prefers moist, well-draining soil, but is drought-tolerant once established. It does not need fertilizing.
For a tidy appearance, deadhead after blooming (cut each flower stem down to the rest of the foliage). The foliage may discolor in the heat or occasionally attract leaf miners. Trim off any affected foliage to encourage new growth.
This species is reportedly less susceptible to leaf miner infestations.

We ship via UPS & USPS (the Post Office), and their ship rates are automatically generated through our site. We do not profit on shipping costs. We are working with these providers to get our customers the best rates possible.

All ship times are subject to change if extreme weather conditions are present here at the nursery or at the shipping destination.

Please note: Depending on the time of year, the foliage of the plants may be trimmed to fit into our shipping boxes. This could delay the flowering of the plant, but many perennials actually benefit from being cut back.

We are currently not able to ship to Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and outside of the US.
