Deschampsia flexuosa is a native cool season grass with thin, arching, wiry, dark green blades that form dense clumps. Its flower stems arise in summer and bear airy panicles of purple to bronze flowers that turn gold as the seed ripens.
Native to several continents, including N. America, it is naturally found in dry open woods, fields, grasslands and other open areas.
A perennial grass, commonly called Crinkled Hair Grass, Deschampsia flexuosa prefers light to partial shade and organic-rich, moist, well-drained to dry soil. It can take full shade, but will not bloom as well. Cut the old foliage to the ground in late winter.
