Carex is a perennial that forms low to medium tufts of grass-like leaves, although it is not a true grass. Also referred to by its common name, Sedge, Carex is grown for its foliage and is typically used as a groundcover or edger. Most sedge prefer some shade, moist to wet soil and produce inconspicuous flowers in the spring.  However, there are types that will grow well in drier soils and some will tolerate or even prefer sun.
